Halo 5 Preview

Halo 5 launches at midnight on Monday (Tuesday? I never know how to say this) and I am anxious to get my hands on it. All month I have posted articles about how good this game could be, what I am excited for, and what could go wrong. Previously I have tried to stay as objective and neutral as possible – this post is different. Here is my opinion of what I expect Halo 5 to be like.

Let’s get this out of the way – the Halo 5 hype machine has been working well. I’m drawn in, I am excited, and I (for the most part) have not been this excited for a Halo game since Halo 3. I’m worried though…I know for a fact that there are more Fireteam Osiris missions than Blue Team missions in the campaign. What implications does this have for the game? I’m not sure… for all we know the Blue Team missions could be really, really long. And the Fireteam Osiris missions could be shorter bursts. If the latter turns out to be more like the former, meaning that our time with Blue Team is extremely limited, I am not sure how much I am going to like this game. I don’t like being forced on characters, and if they do that then it will definitely feel like they are forcing Locke on me. Which will instantly make me hate him. I am hesitant, but I really hope that it pleasantly surprises me. I am going in with tampered expectations.

On the other hand, the multiplayer looks incredible. The beta was a ton of fun, and showed me promise for the best Halo gameplay…ever (yeah, I said it). Warzone is awesome, Arena looks to be back to true Halo multiplayer form, and all DLC being free is a nice cherry on top. For the multiplayer, it looks like we will be getting our cake, and eating it too.

Give us a score! Ok – here is my prediction. Review embargo for the game is lifted on Monday – so we should see this pretty soon.

  • Metacritic score for Halo 5 will be around 8.5/10.
  • IGN will give the game a flat 9/10
  • Gamespot will give the game a 8.5/10
  • And other critics will fall in the realm of 8-9.5

Why do I say that? Well, exactly for the reasons above. I think opinions on the campaign will swing one way or the other. Either people will praise it for its ingenuity, or will have scorn because of its departure from typical Halo campaigns. The multiplayer and gameplay is where the great score will come from, with the campaign either lifting this game to legendary status or just leaving it at a “great” status. Also, if the multiplayer is unstable at launch, that will hurt the game a lot. Personally, I think that they did the Beta early enough and have had enough launch events to gather data from that it should be a pretty good launch.

…Of course, I could just be crazy. Expect an initial impression from me when I get my hands on the finished product, as well as a full review soon after.

Also, be sure to check in on my Twitch channel (see below) as I will be doing some streaming of Halo 5 the night it launches. Expect a few campaign missions, some arena, and you know I am going to get into Warzone soon after.
